G20 SUMMIT SOUTH AFRICA

Building on the momentum we created ahead of last year’s G20 Summit in Brazil, we continue to champion our simple but powerful message: Tax the Super Rich. Together with our global allies, we delivered a series of high-impact interventions to ensure this call resonated loudly in the run-up to the G20 Summit in South Africa.

Polling of South African Millionaires

We polled South African Millionaires on their attitudes to Extreme Wealth and Taxation, the results spoke for themselves. With over 70% of those polled saying they would support a 2% wealth tax. Read all about the poll and our work in The Daily Maverick and the full poll results can be found here.

We lit up the sky ahead of the G20 Summit

Ahead of the G20 Summit in South Africa, we lit up the skyline with a powerful projection calling on world leaders to deliver hope through bold action on inequality. Our message “Be the people’s champion: Tax the Super Rich” served as a clear reminder that a more equal and sustainable future is both necessary and within reach. As G20 leaders meet this week, the projection underscores growing global demand for policies that address extreme wealth concentration and restore fairness to our economies. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our member Abigail Disney and to former Prime Minister of Senegal and Club de Madrid member, Mimi Touré, for their unwavering support in amplifying this call.

G20 Social Summit - Extreme Wealth Line Event

At the G20 Social Summit, we were proud to play a central role in partnership with the New Economics Foundation in elevating the global conversation on extreme wealth and inequality by co-hosting a dedicated session on the need for an Extreme Wealth Line to reduce inequality and strengthen democratic resilience. With opening remarks delivered by South Africa’s Deputy Minister Kenny Morolong, the session. Rethinking Inequalities for Fairer Economies and Stronger Democracies: How Much Is Too Much? With contributions from Amitabh Behar (Oxfam International) and Fernanda Balata (NEF, EWLI) explored the drivers of today’s inequality crisis, the systemic risks posed by extreme wealth, and new frameworks for understanding wealth concentration as a form of structural harm. Moderated by NEF Chief Executive Danny Sriskandarajah, the dialogue engaged participants in a lively debate on multilateral reforms, the politics of taxing wealth, and the crucial role of Global South leadership. The session closed with a call for continued collaboration as the world looks ahead to the 2026 US G20 Presidency and the urgent task of reshaping global norms on inequality and extreme wealth.

G20 A Fairer Future Joint event with Oxfam SA

On the eve of the Summit, more than 80 leaders from government, civil society, academia, the media, and the wealth-holder community gathered at the Da Vinci Hotel in Johannesburg for A Fairer Future: High-Level Reception on Inequality an event that successfully set the agenda ahead of the G20 Summit. Hosted by Patriotic Millionaires and Oxfam South Africa, the evening opened with remarks from H.E. Austin Gormley, Ireland’s Ambassador to South Africa, and a framing by moderator Nompu Siziba on the findings of the Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts, including the sharp rise in wealth concentration and strong public support especially among South African millionaires for introducing a wealth tax. A distinguished panel featuring Amitabh Behar, Winnie Byanyima, Dr Wanga Zembe-Mkabile, and Professor Jayati Ghosh explored the systemic risks of extreme wealth, the political feasibility of wealth taxation, and emerging proposals such as the establishment of an International Panel on Inequality.

A lively discussion and audience Q&A underscored broad, cross-sectoral agreement that tackling extreme inequality is not a fringe idea but a mainstream and urgent priority for global stability. With robust media attendance and strong social-media engagement, the event highlighted South Africa’s leadership as G20 President and demonstrated clear political and public will for progressive action on inequality and the taxation of extreme wealth. The evening closed with a networking reception, leaving participants energised and aligned ahead of the G20 Summit, united in a shared call for fairer economic systems and bold international cooperation.
